Akron Exchange Street Quick Build

Type: Tactical Urbanism Pilot Project

Scale: 9 City Blocks; 3/4 mile

Status: Completed

Street Plans was awarded a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to work with the City of Akron and the University of Akron to design and construct a three-month complete street pilot project along Exchange Street.

Street Plans kicked off the public engagement process with a community workshop in November of 2017 and led varios design workshops with stakeholders and community members into the Spring of 2018. The team then landed on a final design to be implemented in the Summer of the same year.

Together with university students and City staff, Street Plans led the planning and implementation of a two-way protected bike lane along Exchange Street. The completed bike lane covered roughly 0.75 miles and was evaluated over a period of three months to gather community input and inform the permanent redesign of Exchange Street in 2021.
