Type: New Town Master Plan
Size: 700 acres
Status: Planning + Design Underway
Bicycle City has a long and ongoing development history. The project was initially conceived by founder/developer Joe Mellett in the early 1990s. Early models were built and drawings were created to share the vision of what, and how a new car-free community could be developed in the United States.
In 2006 the project attracted enough seed funding to begin the site selection and development process. With the help of Street Plans, preliminary planning, urban design, and marketing efforts began soon thereafter.
In 2010 the Bicycle City team closed on a beautiful 700+ acre, lakeside site located in in Lexington County, SC, approximately 12 miles from the state capital in Columbia.
The new town will feature a series of car-free neighborhoods linked by a connected network of streets scaled designed for walking and bicycling. A complete network of natural greenways will be preserved around the central lake and numerous ponds/wetlands located within and nearby the development site. Current conceptual plans also call for several mixed-used town and neighborhood centers, with a mix of open space types designed to serve as the main nodes of civic activity.
