Confronting COVID-19

Street Plans Principal Tony Garcia participated in a recent webinar hosted by ULI’s Building Healthy Places Initiative. He was joined by Warren Logan, policy director of mobility and interagency relations for the city of Oakland, California; and Destiny Thomas, founder and chief executive officer of Thrivance Group, a consulting group in Los Angeles. Together they discussed how creative uses of transportation infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic have helped provide spaces to gather in socially distant ways while at the same time supporting local businesses and promoting equity.

Garcia talked about Street Plans’ work during the pandemic and how the firm has worked alongside cities to rethink the way their street networks are organized and respond to the mobility challenges that have appeared during these challenging times.

He also discussed the firm’s recent publication, Streets for Pandemic Response and Recovery, a guide that has enabled cities to design their own slow-streets programs and other initiatives to make public spaces safer and easier to access and navigate.
