New Haven Secures $11m Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant!

We’re thrilled to share that our long-standing client, the New Haven Department of Traffic, Transportation, and Parking has secured an $11m grant from the US DOT’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program (SS4A).

In our role as an on-call consultant, Street Plans is thrilled to have helped TT+P secure its second SS4A grant, awarded on September 5, 2024. This latest one will advance safety and inclusion along Chapel Street, pictured here, one of the city’s most dangerous streets, where half of the crashes that occur there result in serious or fatal injuries for vulnerable road users.

The grant money will be used to implement safety upgrades along 1.6 miles of the corridor, which links State Street Station, Downtown’s Historic Town Green, Yale University, and a number of historically disadvantaged communities. Core to the project will be converting a nearly mile-long one-way segment to two-way vehicular travel, transforming two intersecting streets into car-free public spaces, and design preparation for the arrival of bus rapid transit service.
