Street Plans Co-Leading CNU Legacy Project in New Bedford

For the third year in a row, Street Plans has the honor of co-leading the Congress for the New Urbanism’s Legacy Project, which pairs pro bono design teams with local municipalities and non-profit organizations in the host city for its annual gathering.

This year’s effort in the coastal city of New Bedford, Massachusetts, co-led with Arup, is focused on the “Love the Ave” initiative that is helping revitalize Acushnet Avenue and the surrounding area in the city’s north end.

The team recently facilitated a series of stakeholder meetings, design sessions, and presentations for the public.

The design team partnered with CNU staff, the City of New Bedford, the Massachusetts Planning Department, and the Massachusetts Transformative Development Initiative (TDI), a state run program that aims to stimulate economic growth and sustainability within “Gateway Cities” that feature a high percentage of immigrants.

In the coming months, the design team will prepare a draft and final plan to boost ongoing efforts to bring more vitality to one of the historic city’s most important commercial corridors. The draft plan will be presented back to the community in June during CNU 33 in Providence, Rhode Island.
