PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED
In October 2022, Street Plans was hired by the NYC DOT to manage the design and implementation of Doyers Street in the historic neighborhood of Chinatown in New York City, working closely with the Chinatown BID.
In 2017 the Chinatown BID launched a pilot program to make Doyers Street a pedestrian-only street for a period of one month. This initiative was successfully received by locals and led to it becoming a permanent pedestrian-only street with a new asphalt mural every year as a part of the Open Street program.
The tactic was to enliven the street and enhance the user experience as people navigated through the corridor. This is a pivotal place for the history and development of both New York City and Chinatown that dates back to the 19th century. It has some of the oldest businesses in the neighborhood.
We believe that there is no better way to honor and recognize this place than with art. Asphalt art revamps this pedestrianized street with vibrant colors that attract an increase in foot traffic which translates to an increase in revenue for local businesses as well.
