Street Plans partnered with the Meatpacking Business Improvement District to transform a historic segment of West 14th Street into a welcoming pedestrian promenade linking the District with the High Line, Little Island, and Pier 57. Building on the District’s Western Gateway Public Realm Vision, our team developed an interim design response that reclaims 16,000 square feet of curbside space for people—improving east–west connectivity, supporting storefronts, and increasing seating and greenery, while ensuring essential loading and bus access is maintained.
Installed in just two weeks, the project introduces five custom decks—flush and ADA-compliant over historic cobbles—paired with a linear “surface flex zone” defined by granite blocks and large tree planters. New amenities include lush landscaping, bike parking, and a range of seating types that respond to the dynamics of each location. The modular system is designed for year-round use, easy maintenance, and future reconfiguration—for pop-ups, kiosks, or expanded seating as needs evolve. Early results show a safer, livelier corridor that invites locals and visitors to linger—demonstrating how tactical materials can deliver placemaking quickly and beautifully at the district corridor scale.
