Street Plans partnered with Stamford’s Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department and the Stamford Downtown Special Services District to lead a comprehensive visioning process for Bedford Street, one of downtown’s most important commercial and dining corridors. The project combined rigorous existing-conditions analysis with an extensive public engagement effort, including more than 1,300 survey responses, two pop-up events, and targeted outreach to property owners, to develop a community-driven vision for the corridor.
In the existing conditions report, detailed public-life studies documenting pedestrian flow, dwell time patterns, and seating behavior identified clear opportunities to rebalance the street toward people. Observations showed heavy clustering around outdoor dining areas, limited public seating, constrained clear paths as narrow as five feet, and consistent demand for more comfortable pedestrian space. Coupled with analyses of curb use across seasons, traffic volumes, parking supply, and streetscape amenities, this work established a strong baseline for design decision-making.
Street Plans produced three alternative design concepts—from a fully pedestrianized plaza to multiple shared-street configurations—each prioritizing expanded pedestrian zones, safer crossings, improved outdoor-dining operations, and a richer public-realm experience.
