Project Status: Plan Adopted and Installed by the City
Street Plans was hired by the City of Jersey City to design a detailed, contractor-ready “Quick Build” striping and signage plan for a one-mile segment of Washington Boulevard. The corridor is a primary north-south link through a portion of New Jersey’s dense “gold coast.”
At six lanes, the corridor was largely known to be over capacity and unwelcoming to anyone not driving a car. With a strong need to improve traffic safety supporting a more business-friendly environment, Street Plans’ design re-allocated vehicular travel lanes and excessively wide curb radii with painted curb extensions, refuge islands, protected bike lanes, and “floating” bus islands to improve safety and accessibility. This “right-sizing” project was undertaken in October 2019 and was fast-tracked in order to align with a last-minute resurfacing project that commenced November 4th.
